Um, they met when Orlando (Elissa's brother in all but blood) had an exchange trip, a couple of years early because he was so excellent at French? So Liss would know her quite well and they would have kept in touch.

Person A gets assigned an exchange student, Person B. Person A goes and lives with Person B and their family for around 9 days and then returns. A few months later, Person B goes and lives with Person A for the same length of time. At least, that's what happened with my exchange.
