"I haven't been this scared for a long time," Tom nodded, stroking a hand through Ben's hair and rubbing his back soothingly.

"What?" Tom asked just as quietly, and calmly, but couldn't help the thoughts that raced through his head.

Ben pulled away and reached into his pocket. "Well I started think about you and me and the kids." he said.

"Yes...?" Tom asked, confused.

"And then I started thinking about you and me and how crazy our relationship is. And I started wondering how far we could take this." Ben said. He pulled his hand out of his pocket. "And then I thought, why not get married?" He opened his hand to reveal a silver colored ring made of a green of emerald in between two strips of stainless steel.

Tom blinked at Ben, eyes flicking between the ring and his partner's face, then pinched his own arm. "Okay, this is real," he breathed, chest heaving.

Tears of joy filled Tom's eyes as he nodded enthhusiastically. "Yes, a thousand times yes," he said, struggling to keep his voice from breaking.

Ben smiled and took Tom's hand, slipping the ring on his finger.

"YES!!" Jo shouted from her hiding spot. She quickly covered her mouth.

Tom turned around to look directly at her. "Joanna..." he said, his voice mildly threatening.

Ben pinched Tom's arm lightly.

"Boring? Papa, Dad just proposed!" Jo whined.

"Yes, and you would know about it in due course. As it is, I am thinking of taking back bridesmaid responsibilities," Tom warned.

"I never said it was boring, darling," he murmured. "I was saying she shouldn't listen in on any conversation, interesting or boring." He leaned in for a kiss.
