Meredith was slightly shocked but moved to do the arm wound. She frowned softly as she realized the bullet was pretty deep. "The bullet is deeper than we thought." she informed Derek before cutting the wound open a bit more. She reached in with a clamp and grabbed the bullet. She noticed that as she was pulling, blood was starting to pool. "It's damaged an artery. If I pull it out he'll bleed out." she said, looking up at Derek to see what he wanted to do.

"Stay there," Derek murmured, holding out his hands for clamps. He clamped above and below the damage on the artery, then nodded to Meredith. "Gently, when you're ready.

She took a deep breath and gently pulled the bullet out and setting it in the dish.

Derek carefully cleaned out the wound, trying to see whether it was suturable or if it would need a synthetic patch. "So, where do we go from here?" he prompted Meredith.

Meredith looked at the artery. "It looks like it needs some suturing." Meredith said, confident in her answer.

Derek nodded. "Yes, in this case the damage is small enough to only require sutures." He carefully began to suture the artery, watching cautiously. "But in the event of more extensive damage, what would happen then?"

"We'd have to put in a synthetic patch." she said.

Derek nodded, happy with his sutures, then carefully removed the clamps. "You're okay to close up now, Doctor Grey," he nodded.

Derek stayed to watch, his annoyance at the damage he had probably caused with his slip growing.

"One..." Meredith whispered. "Two..." She glanced at Derek with her eyes. "Three..." she breathed out and took a deep breath.

She finished her sutures and stepped back so he could inspect them.

Derek nodded approvingly. "Okay, we're done here," he nodded to the rest of the staff, yanking off his gloves and apron, washing his hands with furious vigour.

Meredith slowly took off her apron and gloves. She washed her hands thoroughly and watched him out of the corner of her eye.

Derek's movements were abrupt and to-the-point, it was obvious he was annoyed at himself as he moved to dry his hands, slinging his mask in the bin.

Meredith watched him and then dried her own hands, slipping past him to leave and give him some space. She didn't feel like she knew him well enough to comfort him.

Derek followed her out. "Meredith-" he said. "Can you- could you watch him? Page me when he comes out of the anaesthetic?"

Meredith turned and offered him a small genuine smile. She walked towards the OR and grasped his hand briefly as she passed him.

Meredith stayed with patient until he started to wake up. "Page Dr. Shepherd." she told one of the nurses.

Derek thanked the patient when he finished, and stepped outside so he could sit on the floor and breathe a sigh of relief.

Meredith went and sat beside him, not saying anything. She looked at him.
