She sighed. "I'm going to check on Spengler." she said and got up, leaving her untouched coffee and heading back to the elevator.

Derek sighed, downing his coffee in a few, burning, gulps, then jogged after Meredith, holding her coffee. "I'm sorry," he murmured from behind her.

She turned around. "I didn't ask you to kiss me." she said. When the elevator dinged, she stepped in and pressed a button for the the right floor.

"I know, but I bought you coffee," Derek tried to placate her, holding it out as he stepped into the elevator behind her.

She looked at him for a brief moment and took the coffee. "Thank you." she muttered.

Meredith turned her head and wiped away a tear that was threatening to spill down her face. She felt a little used. When the elevator dinged and the doors opened, she left the elevator and went to Spengler's room.

Derek sighed and followed, dodging a file Bailey tried to hit him with.

Meredith smiled at Spengler. "How are you feeling?" she asked and checked his chart.

"Much better, thank you," Spengler smiled. "Thank your boyfriend for me, will you? He seemed the busy type."

"I will thank him, but he's not my boyfriend. He's my attending." Meredith said politely.

Meredith couldn't help but laugh a little. "No, we would have had to have been together for anyone to end anything. He's just a very good doctor that I work with." she said, smiling at Spengler.

"He looks the good boyfriend type," Spengler nodded. "And I've seen the way you two look at each other. You should go for it."

Meredith frowned slightly. "Should I be worried about that wince?" she asked him and stepped closer.

"It's just a little pain," Spengler reassured her. "Comes from having your head cut open."

"Alright. Well, if you need anything, I'll be around." she said with a smile. She hung his chart back on the foot of the bed and turned to leave the room.
