Lidija followed as Alexei grabbed Pietro's hand and ran with him.

Pietro flinched as he heard shouting coming nearer, a mob just around the corner. Natalia pulled them all into a closet to wait for them to go past, then resumed running.

Lidija ran ahead with Nat, using the remainder of her breath to ply her with questions. Alexei started to lag behind slightly.

Pietro linked his and Alexei's hands together, using short bursts of his speed to keep up with the girls.

Lidija glanced around, concerned at how far the boys were falling behind.

Natalia swore as she looked back over her shoulder and glimpsed the mob returning, shouting after the runaways.

"We can't outrun them." Lidija panted. "Isn't there somewhere we can hide or something?"

"just a bit further," Natalia called, flinging open a fire exit at the end. Pietro released Alexei's hand to speed up and help Lidija.

Alexei tried to keep up despite the burning stitch in his side but he had never been much of a runner.

Pietro shot through the fire doors and turned to find Alexei.

Alexei looked behind to find the mob close on his heels.

"Alexei!" Pietro yelped, moving forwards and straining at Natalia's sudden iron grip on him.

Lidija put her hand on Pietro's shoulder as well, knowing how stubborn he could be. "Please Pietro, I can't, won't lose you."

"Alexei!" Pietro screamed as Natalia yanked him away from the door. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he struggled against his captor. "Alexei!" he screamed for a second more before he slumped as Natalia knocked him out. She heaved him up over her shoulder and jerked her head at Lidija, starting to run again.

Lidija bit her lip and ran after Natalia, feeling incredibly guilty about leaving Alexei but recognising that there was nothing that she could do.

Natalia only stopped running when she pushed open the door to a flat, making her way inside, dumping Pietro on the bed and hurrying over to the chest of drawers, pulling out a radio set and setting it up on the table.

Lidija immediately made her way over to Pietro to see how he was, still panting heavily.

Pietro stirred after a few minutes. Natalia was speaking rapidly into the radio into a foreign language.

Lidija listened intently, attempting to pick up some information, but she couldn't make out more than a single word or two.

Pietro shot up with a cry of, "Alexei!", desperately looking around.

Lidija put a hand on Pietro's shoulder, hushing him soothingly.

Pietro turned to face her, tears welling in his eyes. "No..." he whimpered.

Pietro hugged his knees to his chest and curled up on the bed, tears rolling freely down his face. Natalia turned off the radio and turned to Lidija.
